Turkmenistan Mineral Fertilizer Project

Turkmenistan has been actively engaged in several mineral fertilizer projects in recent years. Some of the major ones are as follows: ### South Korea’s Daewoo E&C Fertilizer Plant Project – **Project Details**: Daewoo Engineering & Construction of South Korea has won the bid to build a fertilizer plant in Turkmenabat, 450 kilometers east of Ashgabat. The project is expected to cost about 1 trillion won (about $730 million). Upon completion, it will have an annual production capacity of 350,000 tons of phosphate fertilizer and 100,000 tons of ammonium sulfate, along with other auxiliary facilities. – **Significance**: Daewoo E&C views this project as an important step to strengthen its presence in Central Asia, especially in the petrochemical and agricultural fields, as well as in infrastructure and urban development. ### Gara Bogaz Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant Project – **Project Details**: The plant is located on the Caspian coast of Turkmenistan. It was built by a consortium of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp and Turkey’s Gap Insaat in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at a cost of $1.5 billion. Using natural gas as feedstock, it has an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons of urea. – **Financing**: The Japan Bank for International Cooperation provided most of the financing, while state firm Turkmenhimiya covered the remaining costs. – **Significance**: This project helps Turkmenistan diversify its exports, which were previously dominated by natural gas. ### Garlyk Potash Fertilizer Plant Project – **Project Details**: The Garlyk Mining and Processing Plant in Lebap province was built by Belarus near local potash deposits at a cost of over $1 billion. It has an annual production capacity of 1.4 million tons of potash fertilizer. – **Significance**: The plant can meet the high domestic and export demand for fertilizer. Its products are expected to be exported to countries such as China and India. ### 170,000 Tons of Compound Mineral Fertilizer Project – **Project Details**: In 2019, the Turkmenbashi Chemical Plant announced an international tender for a project to increase the production of compound mineral fertilizers. The new project will be equipped with high-tech equipment and have an annual production capacity of 170,000 tons of compound mineral fertilizers. – **Approval**: President Berdymukhamedov approved the project at a cabinet meeting on August 30, 2019, emphasizing its economic viability due to the country’s rich raw material resources. ### Mixed Mineral Fertilizer Enterprise Project in Turkmenabat – **Project Details**: In 2022, the construction of a mixed mineral fertilizer plant was underway in Turkmenabat. The project aims to create a production enterprise with an annual output of 170,000 tons of mixed mineral fertilizers at a construction cost of $18 million. The Abu Dhabi Development Fund is providing funding for the project. Germany’s Maschinenfabrik Köppern GmbH & Co.KG’s technology will be applied in the plant.
